Will your party hat be funny or fantastic?

An in store display
Another way to provide opportunities to celebrate the achievements of the children in your class is to arrange for their finished products to be displayed in a local store that sells hats. A large department store is ideal. It is important to let the children know that this is a possibility at the start of the unit. One way of doing this is to arrange for someone from the local store to visit the class and talk to the children about the purpose of the display. You will need to work out in advance what this purpose is - to showcase ideas for fun hats, to find out what sorts of fun hats people might wear.
This may cause you to change the nature of the Big Task from party hats to be worn by children to fancy dress or carnival hats. It will depend on the arrangements you make with store. It is possible that the store will be able to supply a range of 'heads' for the display in which case the children will need to make measurements on these and design the hats to fit accordingly. The hats can then be put on display in the shop window to be seen by passers by or in a display case in the millinery department to be seen by customers. There are opportunities here to promote the work of the school in the local media - press, radio and television. A large department store will have staff with responsibility for this sort of communications and you should liase with them.
