Understanding batteries

When a child chooses a battery she needs to think about the following.

selection of batteries
1 Size - A large battery holds more energy than a small one. It will last longer but it will cost more. There must be enough room for it in the design.

2 Voltage - The bigger the voltage, the harder the battery pushes the electricity around the circuit. If the voltage is too large, the components get hot and 'burn out'. If it is too low, they do not work properly. The common voltages available are 1.5 V, 3 V, 4.5 V, 6V and 9 V.

3 Type - rechargeable batteries are expensive. Three types of non-rechargeable battery are readily available. They are colour coded according to the amount of current and daily use they can supply:
- blue for low current intermittent use e.g. door bell;
- red/brown for medium current moderate use e.g. torch;
- black - for high current sustained use e.g. radio or toy.
