Materials for fridge magnets

You can use a wide range of materials for fridge magnets. Here are some possibilities:

o plain white card that the children colour themselves;
o plain coloured card;
o coarse single sided corrugated card - this is usually available only in brown;
o fine single sided corrugated card - this is available in a wide range of colours;
o felt - this is available in a wide range of colours;
o Plastizote - a flexible plastic material, available in bright colours.

Pile of different types of card etc
In all cases the thicker the material the more difficult it will be to cut, with thick card and coarse corrugated card being the most difficult.

Fine corrugated card is expensive but is a very attractive material. By using the direction of the corrugations the design can be made very appealing. For example, the corrugations on the blue 'fur' and yellow 'fur' of the cat magnet are at right angles to one another.

PVA glue will work as an adhesive for all of these materials, but it is important to remember not to use too much, as this can make card become soggy.

Hand colouring white card with paint often renders the card soggy and using a fine line marker pen a tedious and time consuming task. Using a broad-tipped marker with bold rapid strokes before the shape is cut out is preferable. Alternatively, you can provide patterned wrapping paper which children can use to cover the card quickly with an attractive result.
