Links to literacy
It is possible to use links with literacy in a really effective way in teaching this unit. Developing a set of instructions that are the carried out, for example writing and following a recipe, is a useful exercise in technical writing. And of course it is made much more real in a designing and making task because the recipes will have been developed by the children and the result of following the recipe, the pastry product, will be eagerly anticipated. 
The response of the intended consumer will also be something of interest. Exactly how to find out what the consumer might want in the first place and whether these wants were met by the product also provide opportunities for writing that has purpose beyond learning how to write well.
