What can you learn from a textile tree?

Linking with science
There are strong links with the science programme of study "Materials and their properties - Grouping materials". You can use the textile tree with its samples of materials plus information as the basis for a science activity.
You can ask groups of children to find sets of materials with particular properties - roughness, shininess, transparency, slipperiness, crunchiness. The greater the number of different textile teaching cards you have on your tree, the more sets of particular properties the children will be able to find.
You can extend the activity by asking the groups to put their materials in an order - e.g. least rough to most rough. This will provide a simple introduction to fair testing.
Each group can present their findings by making a simple, labelled display. You can use the displays as the focus for questions to the class about possible uses for the materials is each group. This will reinforce the work carried out in sessions one and two.
