Modelling appearance with coloured papers

Although the authoring software provides a rapid way of modelling different screen designs there is something to be said for organising different colour schemes and layouts by using coloured papers. This kinaesthetic learning is more appealing to some children and can form a bridge between the ideas that are developing in their mind and the screen on which they will ultimately appear. You can facilitate this sort of modelling by organising the following resources:

  • sheets of different coloured A4 size paper to represent the background screen,
  • sheets of different coloured A5 size paper to represent images on the screen,
  • selections of different size, different geometrical shape, different colour papers to represent buttons,
  • several card templates of a monitor screen shape into which the children can place the various design elements,
  • scissors for changing the shapes.

Any screen that seems particularly attractive can be fixed by using a glue stick. You can make a collection of these can be made into a class display.
