Vocabulary for solid geometry

The 3D forms that you can make from 2D nets can be accurately described using the following terms.

  • A flat surface is called a face. a cube with the face, vertex and edge marked

The face is usually a regular polygon i.e. a square - four sided polygon; a triangle a three sided polygon.
  • The line along which two sides of different faces touch is called an edge.
  • The point where three or more edges meet is called a vertex (vertices for the plural).

So a cube has 6 faces.
Each face is a regular polygon of the same size - a square.
A cube has 12 edges.
A cube has 8 vertices.
