Using ICT to produce nets

You can show children how to draw nets on the computer using simple draw software. Use the software to draw each face of the net and then carefully position the faces so that adjacent sides overlap. In the case of a cube it is a case of drawing six squares and positioning them to form the overall cross-shaped net as shown below.
Note that these nets do not have the tabs required for gluing the net into a 3D form. These can be added in similar fashion. This provides as interesting challenge for more able pupils.
It is also possible to produce variations of slightly smaller size to produce drawers or inserts that fit snuggly.
Pupils can also add images to the nets they produce. These can come from a variety of sources:
clip art files
their own drawings or photographs that have been scanned in
digital photographs.
So it is possible both to draw and decorate the nets to form the container or parts of the container on screen. The results can be colour printed onto thin card, cut out and assembled.
