How should your puppets tell their story?

Bright lights that don't get hot

Unlike light bulbs, high intensity white Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) provide a bright light without getting hot. They have to be wired to the battery the correct way round and protected by a resistor to prevent damage and failure. resistor for puppets

You can tell which leg is which on the LED by looking at the case. The leg next to the 'flat' on the case is called the cathode and this should be connected to the negative terminal on the battery. The other leg, called the anode, is connected to the protecting resistor and this resistor is connected to the positive terminal on the battery.

Use the yellow table to decide what resister you would need if you are using a 9V battery. This will have the following colours yellow, violet, and brown followed by either silver or gold.

The able children in your class will be able to design circuits involving two 'eyes', which can be controlled independently by push to make switches. It is best to use a PP3 battery with a snap on connector and join the components to the bare wires by soldering.

You can buy red, green, yellow and blue LEDs, which your children will be able to use for all sorts of 'eyes' and puppet body adornment.
