Developing links with literacy
Writing instructions are an important part of the National Literacy Strategy in Year 4 as this extract from work to be carried out in Term 1 shows:
25. to write clear instructions using conventions learned from reading;
26. to improve the cohesion of written instructions and directions through the use of link phrases and organisational devices such as sub-headings and numbering;
27. to write a non-chronological report, including the use of organisational devices, e.g. numbered lists, headings for conciseness by:
- generalising some of the details;
- deleting the least important details.
You can give the writing of instructions purpose by asking the children to write instructions for the use of the board games they are designing. You can suggest that they work in pairs, taking it in turns to read and try out the instructions for playing each other's games. In this way they can discuss those parts that are ambiguous or unclear and develop improvements.
