More about layers

You may find that some children benefit considerably by having access to a range of pre-cut shapes with which to experiment in assembling layers. If you make available geometric shapes in three sizes - large, medium and quite small - then children will be able to experiment rapidly with the body - head - features model described in Screen 4. A selection of useful geometric shapes would be circles, ovals, squares, triangles and rectangles. As the children build up the layers you can discuss with them the limitations of this approach.

geometric shapes
It helps you sort out what goes in each layer but probably doesn't give you the exact shapes you want. So you can see this activity as preliminary modelling.

The next step is to decide how to change the geometric shapes so that they are what you want. The children can then use the given shapes as a drawing template and add or subtract to the outline according to the dictates of their design ideas.
