Making large ones
The instruments made by the children in the small tasks establish the basic principle of how musical instruments work - something, somewhere vibrates at a frequency that we can hear!
The instruments they make in the small tasks are small - based on small tins, small plastic bottles and short wooden blocks. Often children will want to make larger versions of these instruments when it comes to the big task. Similar materials can be used for some of the vibrating parts - elastic from the haberdashers instead of elastic bands, hardwood off cuts instead of softwood blocks, thin rubber sheet instead of balloons.
It is important here that they don't spend too much time constructing the larger parts. Wide plastic tubing used for drainage provides a good substitute for small tins. Your local builders' merchant may be able to provide off-cuts free of charge. U-section plastic guttering provides a good base for sounding blocks.
