Literacy in primary schools

two children concentrating hard on what they are doing
Children spend one hour each day developing literacy skill. The approach to literacy is similar to that used in D&T. They both use Small Tasks to prepare children for Big Tasks. In literacy the Small Tasks concern the manipulation of complex sentences, the making of a writing frame, the taking of notes, the identification of sounds in words etc. The Big Task is to orchestrate all of these to produce a piece of writing in response to a purpose and audience.

A Science & Engineering Ambassador can make an interesting contribution to literacy work by talking to a class about the sorts of writing scientists and engineers have to do.
