How should your puppets tell their story?

Locating the battery

Placing the battery that drives the special effects LEDs needs careful thought. If the battery is put inside a glove puppet this can make operating the puppet awkward. Putting the battery on the body of a string puppet may make it lopsided when the strings aren't taut.

The best place for the battery is in a box strapped to the puppeteer's wrist. The switches to control the LEDs can be placed on the box too. So, if the LED eyes are on a glove puppet, the wires connecting the battery and switches to the LEDs run from the box to the eyes and back again, inside the puppet. They take up so little room inside the puppet that they do not affect the operating of the puppet. With a box strapped to the wrist of the hand operating the puppet the puppeteer can easily control the switches with his/her other hand.

You can use the same technique for controlling a string puppet. The wires from the battery box simply hang down with the usual strings and are attached to the LEDs through the back of the head or the puppet's hat.
