Boards for board games

frame 1 for Game
Diagram 1
One of the difficulties faced by children is getting an appropriately stiff board for any board game that they require. Thick card is expensive and difficult to cut. They can reinforce thin A4 sized card by using 5mm x 5mm cross section softwood strip as shown in Diagram 1.

Often children find it difficult to cut precisely to length and the resulting wooden frame can look untidy as shown in Diagram 2.

It is important to encourage them to be as accurate as possible but slightly sloping saw cuts can be hidden by having card on both sides of the frame as shown in Diagram 3. Frame 3 for Does this game stop you from being bored

The children can use a thin smear of pva glue to stick the card to the strip or alternatively double-sided adhesive tape.

If the board game requires a board larger than A4 it is possible to make a folding board using two A4 boards as shown in Diagrams 4a and 4b. The key part is the hinge joining the two parts. frame 4a for Game

Two simple ways to achieve a hinge is to use either re-enforced sticky tape or a thin strip of fabric and attach it to the wooden frame by using a staple gun.
