Using a scanner to produce images

flat bed scanner
You can introduce some modern technology into this unit if you have access to a scanner. If the children can find pictures of characters in books, magazines or comics, you can show them how to use the scanner to produce images that can be stored in a computer and then printed out.

If the children want to change the size of the image, you can show them how to do this using image processing software such as Photoshop™. It is possible to change the size of the image keeping everything in proportion by scaling up or down or to distort deliberately the image so that it becomes long and thin or short and fat depending on the effect the child wants to produce. It then becomes easy to make multiple images of different sizes. These can be used for pop-up purposes or hidden behind windows that can be opened.

In this way you can help the children in your class to produce high quality images for their pop-up book and also to avoid mind numbing, time consuming 'colouring in'.
