Which fruits would be good in your salad?

Why is fresh fruit good for us?

Fresh fruit is a good source of vitamins. Vitamins provide protection and maintenance of body processes. If we do not get the vitamins we need then we suffer from vitamin deficiency diseases.

If we do not get enough vitamin C we could develop dry and cracked skin - a condition called scurvy. If we do not get enough vitamin D we could develop a condition called rickets in which bones become malformed.

Some fresh fruit contain dietary fibre that we cannot digest. It passes straight through the digestive system. But if we do not have enough fibre in our diet then we can become constipated. If this continues some people develop irritable bowel syndrome and diverticulitis, an inflammation of the large intestine. Bananas, raisins, apples with skin are all good sources of dietary fibre.
