Extracting your own juice

Extracting juice from fruit, rather than using 'bought in' fruit juice, adds an extra dimension to the task. Extracting juice from citrus fruits is easily done by using a simple hand 'squeezer'. Lever operated juicers are also available.
Children in your class will enjoy using both, but will require supervision. It is quite easy to apply pressure unevenly with the hand squeezer with the result that the squeezer skids out from under the hands of the user. The lever-operated juicers are prone to tip over if care is not taken. Children will find electrical juicers particularly fascinating and, if they have tried using hand squeezers, they will appreciate the saving of time and effort.
Many food processors have juicer and blender attachments. Juice from apples and pears can be obtained by pressing, but this is probably too difficult for the primary classroom unless you have access to a press designed for this purpose.
