Making jam

Making jam is too hazardous an activity to be carried out by children in the primary classroom. You may find that some members of your local community make jam and a visit by them to show the class what they do is an entertaining and educational activity. group of jars of jam

There are opportunities for the children to see the raw materials - fruit, sugar, water and pectin (the gelling agent), to see how the fruit is prepared and the importance of weighing. They can easily be shown how the jars are sterilised and see what happens when this isn't successful - mouldy jam!

If the boiling down and skimming off process is shown it is important to observe strict safety precautions. The careful heating to avoid boiling over and use of the thermometer can also be demonstrated.

And of course the children can see and taste the finished product. The activity can be extended to include product evaluation in which the homemade jam is compared to commercial varieties. The class can thank the person who has shown them how to make jam by designing special labels for the jars.
