Working with children in a primary school

  • While you are working with children there should always be a teacher supervising.
  • You should not make physical contact with any child, or be alone with a child or group of children. You should also be careful not to upset any child by using inappropriate language or tone.

There will be a school policy on Health and Safety and a set of written guidelines for use in D&T and Science lessons. Refer to the guidelines, and ask the teacher to point out any potential hazards unique to the room, the equipment or the children you will be dealing with.

  • Maintaining discipline is the teacher's job, so refer any problems straight away.
  • You may be surprised by the way younger children crowd around you. Their teacher will be used to dealing with them and will tell you the classroom rules about asking for help, fetching and sharing resources.
