How cool is your drink?
4
Customer preferences
Session 4 in the suggested teaching sequence requires each child to find out the preferences of another child (the consumer) so that he or she can then produce a cold drink that meets these requirements.
This is a key part of developing children's designing skills. Finding out what somebody else wants as opposed to just designing and making what you want. This move from an egocentric view of designing is an important part of progression. It also provides for an essential part in the evaluation.
The first two parts of the evaluation compare the composition and making procedures with that in the specification.
A child can get a perfect match but still produce a drink that does not meet consumer preferences, which is why the third part of the evaluation, about consumer response, is so significant. It is important to find time for each child to discuss with their consumer their response to the cold drink and identify ways in which it might be improved.
